Jennie Hendricks-Slave Narrative

Jennie Hendericks was the oldest of seven children. She was born in Georgia and her family was brought to Georgia from Virginia in 1936. Jennie was sold to a plantation owner, Mr.Moore. Mr.Moore was not considered rich because although he had a large plantation he did not have much slaves. Mr.Moore's family consisted of his wife and his six kids. Since Jennie was a child she was brought into the master's house and played with his children. Sometimes Mrs.Moore's son would become jealous because he felt that his mother was giving to much attention to Jennie. Jennie never had to do any work and was not allowed to read or write, but Mr.Moore's children always taught her how. One day Mrs.Moore even taught her how to sew because she seemed interested in it . Jennie was always given food and said it was even better than what most people had. After the war was over freedom was declared and Jennie and her grandmother stayed with Mr.Moore's family. Overtime Jennie's grandmother dies and she soon has a husband from another plantation. He describes that at other
plantations people get severely whipped and were treated very harsh. Jennie lived a very long time and it was believed that she lived long because she was obedient and had a firm belief in God.

I can conclude that Jennie was probably a few of many slaves that was not treated harshly. She had plantation owners who actually cared for her and took great care of her. She was pretty fortunate because like her husband said, at other plantations people were whipped and beaten. Jennie did what she told and behaved well and therefore she was treated with respect. She was probably on eof many slaves who had a kind-hearted master and things were fortunate for her.

Tecumseh Speech

Tecumseh's speech has an evident themes of bravery and challenges, Tecumseh states, "My people are brave and numerous, but the white people are too strong for them alone." This quote proves that there was a challenge for Tecumseh because he's trying to convince the Osages to unite with them because they are having problems with the white people and they feel that without them it would be challenging to defeat them alone. Tecumseh also says, "Who are white people that we should fear them?" This quote by Tecumseh proves that he is brave. Although he has a challenge of defeating the white people alone with his own tribe he is confident and brave. He believes that if they unite with the Osages they have enough strength and power to defeat the white people with uniting all the red men.

Song: "Break Free"  By: Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande's song, "Break Free" resembles the theme of bravery in Tecumseh's speech to the Osages. Ariana sings, "...When I say I don't want ya.. I'm stronger than I've been before ...This is the part when I break free." Ariana Grande's lyrics resembles the theme of bravery in Tecumseh's speech because she is explaining that she is not afraid anymore to tell her boyfriend, in her disastrous relationship, that she is going to stand up to him because she feels that she has the strength now. Likewise to Tecumseh's speech, he speaks to the Osages about how they shouldn't fear the white people once they unite because they feel that they'll have the strength the defeat the white people. Therefore "Break Free" by Ariana Grande resembles the theme of bravery in Tecumsehs speech to the Osages.

Religion in the Early 1800s

The Second Great Awakening was a Protestant revival during the early 1800s. This movement began around the 1790's , was at its peak in the 1800s, and kept rising rapidly after the 1820s where the Baptists and Methodists were creating a movement led by the preachers of their congregation. The Second Great Awakening sparked the establishment of new members of evangelical denominations which then led to the formation of new denominations.

Letter to my Family in the East

Dear Family,                                                                           April 25, 1866
Family's Traveling West
As you know, I am now on my journey to the West. Right now I am in Oregon and I am going to the West to find a better place to start a new life and discover everything I can to start my new beginnings. I want to find gold and wish to become rich, but one of the things I've been eager to do is to ride a canoe on the Mississippi River. I know my desires and dreams seem unlikely to you all, but I am going to do whatever it takes to pursue them.
So, far on my journey, I've been hearing a lot of tales about the Donner Family. It is very creepy because I am currently on the path that is called the Oregon Trail, that they took and apparently they ended up eating one another. What I also heard about this path is that the Donner family's bodies still lay beneath the mountain grounds, where they died. I came on this same path to the West because I wanted to see if there was anything left beneath the grounds they died on (I'm hoping gold). Not many people decided to come take the same path I am taking, but you know me, I've always been adventurous. Each day more and more people die of either starvation or lack of supplies. Many women are pregnant and give birth, which is a beautiful, but disgusting thing. People were talking about how George Donner's wife gave birth on the way to their journey, too bad they all died.
Don't worry about me dying or having a lack of supplies me and my fellow, John have come prepared. Anyways, my next destination is to go to the Sierra foothills to hopefully find some gold nuggets. I've heard a lot of people became rich over there. It's sad that you all have decided to stay back in the East and have decided not to come on this journey with me, but I hope once I get rich off of gold I'll write back to you all and maybe convince you guys to come over to the West. I hope everything is okay back at home, I miss you all dearly and hope to hear back from you soon. Wish me luck on my journey to the West!

Election Day

Flag of Massachusetts
3 Branches of Federal Government
Election day is determined on the the first Tuesday of November. The reason this is because in 1845 Congress passed a law that established when presidential elections be held. It was a good idea for the elections to be held in November because it was when harvest season was over and the harsh winters would not have arrived just yet making it easy for the people. Election Day is held on a Tuesday so that there would not be more than a 34-day period between the first Wednesday of December which is when the presidential election would be held. States where Election Day is a civic holiday are Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Lewis and Clark

Lewis and Clark's purpose  of the expedition was to discover a route to the Pacific Ocean. They also set out too discover information about other habitats in the West.
Expedition Map
Clark,July 4,1805
In Clark's journal entry on July 4,1805 he wrote about how there was heavy dew the night before and how it rained. He also talked about how he was afraid that an accident might happen and how the climate in the Missouri was singular cloudy and the clouds came in every direction. He explained the landscapes and the type of weather that was present in Missouri that day.

Lewis, May 5, 1806
Lewis and Clark
In Lewis' journal entry on May 5, 1806 he wrote about how he set out at 7 in the morning to get to Kooskooske. As they got there, they saw families, obtained dogs, and got some root bread, and dryed roots. He also explained that him and Clark went by an Indian man and they exchanged different things. The Indians invited them over for dinner and the man served Lewis and dog. He then took the dog and threw it at threw it at his breast and face then tomahawked him. After the dinner Lewis and Clark both set out to Colter's creek again meeting another family. Neither of the men didn't have anything to exchange with the family so they couldn't get in everything in return. The night resulted in Lewis and Clark talking to the families and meeting a man who did a good service to them and gave him their address.

War of 1812

The War of 1812 was a conflict between the United States of America and Britain. The United States declared war on June 18, 1812 because of trade restrictions, the impressment of American merchant sailors into the Royal Navy, and British support of Indian tribes against American expansion. First
War of 1812
the British blockaded the Atlantic Coast of the U.S., then naval battles were fought, and finally more battles on land were fought between the British and United States. The United States defeated the British alliances and the outcome of the war resulted in both Britain and the United States signing the Treaty of Ghent which was signed on December 24, 1814. The Treaty of Ghent was a peace treaty that restored the borders of the two countries.

The Star Spangled Banner
On September 14,1814 soldiers raised a huge American flag to celebrate a very big victory of the British during the war of 1812. Francis Scott Key was inspired at the "broad stripes and stars" of the flag and decided to write a song, that is now known as the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics of the song was an importance of the national symbol and started a tradition throughout generations.
A verse I created for the National Anthem:Gave proof through the night that our flag will always stand.
Oh say does that  bright red flag make all you Britain's mad.
O'er our land that really isn't free but we watch the flag wave.

Great Journey Through Lowell

Friday October 10, 2014
On Friday I went to school and went about my day like every other day of the week(besides
Merrimack River
weekends)
and went to crew practice at the Umass Lowell Bellegarde Boathouse right next to the Merrimack River. The water was very still and the view was beautiful. Although, I didn't get to get on the boat on the water some of my teammates and I had to help get our boats and things ready for our first away race for the season. Some of the things we did was to to derig boats, get all oars, and strap the boats on a trailer. After practice, My friend and I went to my house, ate, and made posters for our friend who is on the football team. As soon as we got ready we headed over to Cawley Stadium where the Varsity Lowell High football team was going against out rivals Central Catholic. It was freezing cold and very crowded. People were shouting and screaming cheering on Lowell High, unfortunately we did lose a very tough game and the score was 44-6 Central Catholic with the win. After a cold night at Cawley Stadium I went home and slept.

Sunday October 11, 2014

Lowell High
It was still extremely dark outside when I woke up at 5'oclock in the morning. I rushed in the shower and cleaned up my room to get to the Boathouse no later than 6'oclock to catch the bus to Worcester Massachusetts for our race. I was vey anxious because I left my house at 5:53 and arrived there at 5:58 where I already saw buses lined up. I had brought my Stitch Pillow Pet and my pink Hello Kitty blanket and as soon as the bus drove off I tried to fall asleep. Driving by the Merrimack River is so beautiful at 6 in the morning where the water is an amazing blue color, crystal clear, and a light fog or mist was going over it. The very pretty scene put me to sleep and I slept so comfy on the bus cuddling with my best friend. I woke up about thirty minutes later to see the town and neighborhoods in Worcester. The houses were huge and there were many building when we got to it seemed like a little downtown. Once we arrived at Worcester's Boathouse it was even more cold than Lowell. The mist or fog over their river was enormous but xo amazing and beautiful. The day was going by fast where we ate and watched other boats as they raced. Eventually, it was time for our race, We quickly had to wet launch, walking in the river to place a boat in, and started doing drills up to the start line. As we come to the start line we see so many other boats waiting. We realized that everyone's races became delayed and we waited for 40 minutes until we started. Once we started it was so fast. We passed a boat and finished a 4000 meter race in 19 minutes and 25 seconds. It was great. Then we drove back to Lowell where we quickly had to unload the trailer and get all the boats and supplies back in the Boathouse. After, I went to Family Dollar with my mom where we picked up wrapping paper and a card for my friends birthday the next day. Once I got home I wrapped all the gifts and completely exhausted I went to bed.

Monday October 13, 2014
So exhausted from the night before I woke up early in the morning to get ready for my friend's football game at Central Catholic in Lawrence Massachusetts. Once we got to the field the score was 0-0. The game went by fairly quickly and again Lowell High lost 28-12 Central Catholic with the win. After the game we drove back into to Lowell to pick up a birthday cake because it was my

LHS Football
friend's birthday, picked him up from Cawley Staduim, where we then went to a Chinese Restaurant all the way in Concord Massachusetts. Along the car ride to Concord, my mom gets into an accident around a rotary with this older woman. The lady accused my mom of not being in the right lane, however my mom was actually in the right lane. The accident was not severe and nobody got hurt. Fortunately, the lady involved in the accident was very sweet and forgiving about the situation. After the policed finished looking and asking questions about the accident we then headed to the restaurant. Once getting to the restaurant my family ate and we sang happy birthday to my friend. After we ate, we then went to Kimball Farm in Westford Massachusetts where we ate icecream. Still ready to do other things, I went to have dinner at my friend's house in Lowell Massachusetts with him and his parents. It was a relaxing night with great food and a great movie called Despicable Me. I then went home so tired and went soundly to sleep.

Map of My Route to School
If I had to keep journal of everything I saw or did everyday I think it would be very challenging. I think it would be challenging because while I am doing something I might not have the time to write everything I saw or did and once I have the time to write things down I would've forgotten what I saw. I would not enjoy writing a detailed journal because I will not see something important or do anything adventurous that I would feel to write down in the journal. Some days will be completely boring because I will just be sitting at home and there is nothing so important that I would do that I should write in the journal.

Constitutional Issues

The debate about Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a suspect who took part in the Boston Marathon Bombing, is being questioned about his right in receiving a Miranda warning from investigators. Investigators
have a large amount of evidence that they don't really feel the need to get Dzhokhar to confess to committing the crime. There is a debate because Dzhokhar was not questioned about placing bombs in the place of the Boston Marathon and the investigators are using the public safety exemption to not allow Dzhokhar in receiving his Miranda warnings.
Miranda Warnings

Death Penalty
Another topic that has become an issue is whether Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is illegible in receiving the death penalty. The state of Massachusetts does not have the death penalty, however he will be tried in federal court in going through with the death penalty. The federal court did say the death penalty is an option for Dzhokhar because he did get charged for weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death. It may be a struggle to get Dzhokhar to get the death penalty because he could be years away from trial.

Guns

Massachusetts is fourth strictest state in the country regarding to gun laws. Dzhokhar and his brother Tameralan were reported to having unregistered guns during their assault of law enforcement members. It has been reported that the brothers had a stockpile of ammunition and that they had fired hundreds of rounds of gun fire at police officers during the Boston Marathon event.

There is also another debate of the brothers of the brother suspects on their immigration. Dzhokhar became a United States citizen one year before the bombing, however his brother's citizenship is being
Immigration
questioned and held off because investigators had found out that he was interviewed by the FBI about homeland security from the Russian government. Senator Chuck Grassely and Senator Marco have two different views on whether the two brother's immigration is a problem for the incident.

Privacy
Another constitution issue regarding to the incident of the Boston Marathon Bombing is that police forces violated Dzhokhar and Tamerlan's privacy. The police forces used thermal-imaging technology in a helicopter to search for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in a parked boat. The police forces did not have a warrant to search for Dzhokhar violating his right to the Fourth Amendment where no one can search someone's home without a warrant. The investigators also used imaging and footage used from private security camera which is another issue of the suspect's privacy rights.

Compromises of the Constitution

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQrFFbHrH8RIh45GMGclu4DVgwg9LU1Xgeu7-V8g9vt8jRTUS2HV03lGfiB1wgaS5QHESZ81ynXKcoRhLSwXE8msb0IjhhitTrLCwTP3lJjwn2pTqXDG2oHJx8lM1KDtoY9r6nUxOvat0/s640/great+compromise.jpg
The Great Compromise
The Great Compromise was a compromise in 1787, that was attained during the drafting of the
United States Constitution. The delegates were trying to find a way each state could be represented in Congress. There were two plans, the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan. In the New Jersey plan, the smaller populated states wanted the same number of representatives as the more populated states to represent Congress. They then created a system where the population of a state didn't determine the number of representatives a state had. Each state had the same number of representatives to represent Congress. However, in the Virginia Plan, the more populated states felt that they should have more representatives than the less populated states. The Framers of the Constitution decided to put the two plans together to create a compromise, known as the, Great Compromise. In the Great Compromise the Senate had only two representatives no matter what the population was and in the House of Representatives, the number of representatives of each state was based on the population of that state

 Three-Fifths Compromise
Now that population had some what to do with representation, the framers had to decide on how to
Three-Fifths Compromise
count slaves. States that held slaves wanted to count each slave as a full person, but states that did not hold slaves felt that they should not count slaves as full people. In order to meet an agreement for both sides, the Framers decided to count each slave as three-fifths of a person, calling it the Three-Fifths Compromise.

Texting about the Declaration

Thomas- Hey George, the colonies don't want to be under your rule so I've written up the Declaration of Independence if you want to check it out.
Declaration of Independence

George- Excuse me, I don't think I'm understanding what you're saying Tom. Let me see it.

Thomas- I believe as human we all have our own rights man. You know that can't be taken away?

George- Like what??  You don't make any type of sense!! Who do you think you are?

Thomas- Come on! Really all the colonists have their own rights. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness! God created us all equal and we should have a government that should protect our rights man. Don't you agree Georgie boy? We were all talking about it. Here.

Meeting

George-Why do you need these rights? Why should I?

Thomas-Well the colonists are complaining and saying how you never enforce the laws, you're making it difficult for the people to participate in the government, and most of all the colonists are complaining about your taxation without representation. Look what they were doing when you passed the Stamp Act.
Protesting Stamp

George- Last time I checked I was the KING and you weren't.

Thomas- Well let me tell you plain and simple. We want to be separated from you George.
We want to cut ties with you. We've been fighting for our Independence we won battles. We deserve to separate away from you George. We won the battle of Saratoga and Yorktown. We are getting people from each of the colonists to sign for their consent and they all agree. I'm sorry George we want out.
Thomas- Oh I forgot to add George you owe so much money from the war George. You cannot afford to keep fighting. We deserve our independence from you.

George-You know what whatever I'm done dealing with this anymore sign the declaration. I'll set up a treaty. We'll set up the Treaty of Paris.

Thomas- Tomorrow on July 4 we'll sign the Declaration and declare our Independence from you!!! We'll be free! The United States of America will be independent from Britain!!

George- Yeah Yeah.....

The French and Indian War

The French and Indian War Map

  • The French and Indian War took place from 1754-1763.
  • The war was between Britain and France.
  • The French and Indian war was caused by both the French and British because both wanted their colonies to colonize near the Ohio River Valley. George Washington marched his troops to Fort Dusquesne where they encountered the French and began fighting, which let to the war.
  • The result of the French and Indian War was Britain in victory and they took over most of the lands of their New World. The Proclamation of 1763 was issued to keep settlers away from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. Britain was in great debt and this is when Parliament had to issue the Stamp Act, however the British did not follow and then the Parliament issued the Declaratory Act.
